BIG Search for Innovative Ideas in Wales

The Big Lottery Fund (BIG) has opened round three of its BIG Innovation programme which is looking for new ideas that will address emerging and existing social problems in Wales. Third sector organisations with innovative ideas that have not been tried anywhere else in the UK may apply for grants of between £20,000 and £1 million. The funding is meant to help find ways to bring about real improvements to the communities most in need. Projects can be local, regional or national as long as at least 75% of the people who will benefit live in Wales.

Applicants must be able to show that their proposed project is new and innovative, that they have held extensive consultation with people interested in the work and other service providers, have done thorough research to identify needs and demonstrate that they are working with local regional or national organisations to make the best use of expertise.

BIG’s Director for Wales John Rose said:

“Many organisations want to develop new ways of addressing needs but they often lack the staff and financial resources to try out new ideas. Trying out something new also carries risks – it may only partially work or it may not work at all.

“In the current economic climate, being innovative is challenging, especially if there is no guarantee of success. This is why we launched BIG Innovation in Wales. It can help turn people’s big new ideas into a reality.”

Earlier this year, Cyrenians Cymru Cyf was awarded £793,893 to provide the Community Horse and Pony Scheme. The new community-run equine centre in Swansea aims to tackle issues around urban horse tethering and abandonment whilst involving and supporting the unemployed, substance misusers and disengaged youth in the community.

Organisations that want to apply for Round 3 need to fill out a stage 1 application form. Organisations that are successful at stage one will be invited to submit a stage two application.

The deadline for round three stage one applications is 17 May 2013 (2pm).
