Creating a woodland management plan for volunteers
Abergavenny Community Woodland Group helps manage woodlands in Abergavenny including Jenny’s Wood. We arrange volunteer days to get involved in coppicing, hedge-laying, tree planting and tree thinning and found out about Renew Wales through a local contact who knew about the programme.
Renew Wales supported us to develop a Woodland Management Plan and then providing training on how to implement it. Through having the plan we have been able to attract new members as we know what we're doing longer term and and we can deliver a better product for the land owner. Some of the new members of the group have also been trained by us!
It has all helped revitalise the group and reminded us of the flora, fauna and woodland diversity we have in the wood.
We had a very good relationship with Gareth, the Renew Wales mentor,
‘Gareth was always there at the end of an email, it was easy to fit in with my schedule as a volunteer and he worked with other members of the group to deliver the training’
We were then interested in seeing if we could have support for the trustees of the group about how they could help develop the group further.
We feel it has also impacted on the wider community becuase as a group we are active and are helping to maintain woodland that can be used by the whole community. Volunteers are helping to create community spaces that engage the wider community, as well as specifically involving others in learning new skills and helping to manage valuable community woodland.
